  • I worked in the ED department(s) in the hospital. This was the easiest and best travel assignment I've had. I worked the night shift. The ED and hospital are busy, but manageable. This was a nice change of pace compared to some other Emergency Departments I've worked at previously. It's a small community hospital. A lot of behavioral health (ETOH, suicidal, OD) patients. A majority of the patients were >65 y/o but in fairly good health overall- had their own PCP, mostly compliant with medication regimens and treatment. Most were willing and understanding of procedures, wait times, discharges. Most of the staff is very open to travelers. They appreciate the knowledge base that comes from the experience of travelers. Most of the doctors and mid-level providers are approachable and friendly. However, there are quite a few doctors that have been at Westerly "forever" and are not approachable and downright rude. On the other hand, the night hospitalists are wonderful. Willing to explain diagnoses, tests, etc to admitted patients and will see their patients in the ED before they are transported to the floor. Westerly and the surrounding area is beautiful. It is largely retirement age population and tourists in the summer. Many of the staff and patients know each other or you may see some of your patients at Walmart. EPIC is the charting system. Pretty simple and straightforward. The staffing ratio is between 1:4-5. However, at night there are only 2-3 nurses including a charge RN who takes patients. If it's very busy, you could have upwards of 6-7 or more patients between 3-7am. They will staff you anywhere they need help including triage and charge. All in all, this was a great assignment. Would definitely go back! 01/08/2020
  • Housing was approximately 5-25 mile(s) from the hospital. The name of the housing complex was air bnb. Housing was located in city of Westerly, New London, Groton. On a scale from 1 to 5, I would rate it a 4. My contract was from the end of the summer into fall/winter. Because of this, housing was limited due to vacation season. I had to rent 3 different apartments. I chose to rent an apartment/ house because of my dogs. I lived in New London, Groton, and Westerly. Parts of New London can be "sketchy." Stay closer to Mitchell college and the waterfront and you'll be fine. New London was about a 30 minute commute to the hospital.
