  • I worked in the ICU department(s) in the hospital. If you are expecting a real "ICU" look elsewhere. It's a med-surg dumping ground. I was told in the interview that they occasionally take overflow, what a load of BS that was. Literally, they are full of overflow pt's; so most days you take 3 pt's and of course there is no tech to help out. Then when a real ICU pt rolls in everybody freaks out. It is not a closed run unit so you must continually page multiple doctors for orders; so transferring and discharging are a nightmare. Some pt's wait literally days on end to be discharged. This hospital will also try to float you to different departments as a "tech" if its not your skillset, so you could float to L&D, oh but don't worry your just in theory doing tech work, again BS. There are no protocols or standard order sets for certain common diagnosis like sepsis, DKA, CP, etc., etc. So once again pt's end up waiting for hours for treatment to start. It's "cowboy" medicine here in the cowtown. Had I known that the manager fabricated this story of what sounded like a real ICU I would have passed on the assignment. 02/26/2015
  • Housing was approximately 15 mile(s) from the hospital. The name of the housing complex was Comfort Suites. Housing was located in city of Roanoke. On a scale from 1 to 5, I would rate it a 3. Temporary housing is incredibly expensive and difficult to find, so look for something early. There are extended stay type hotels around, but if you are traveling with a dog > 30lbs be aware that most places will not even consider you staying with them. This is not a dog friendly area.
