Traveling Comfortably with Your Children

While you may be very excited about reaching your new destination, chances are your children are less than thrilled. They do not want to leave their friends, and there is a greatfear of the unknown for children as they move to a new home, The older your child, the more you must consider your child’s personality and must take into account your child’s personality and attitude.  These specific traits will remain fairly constant throughout the child’s life, and you will find that some children are more naturally adaptable than others. You are the one who knows your child best.

Maintain your routines as you travel
Once you have put some thought into your child’s needs and personality, you will then decide whether it is wise to travel with your child. If you can keep your routines close to the same you follow when at home, your chances of having an enjoyable trip with your child are greatly increased. Your child will feel more secure and much happier, which will certainly make for a more pleasant trip for you.

Ask your child’s opinions during the move
Involving your child in any decision-making process is a surefire way to guarantee their interest and cooperation. Moving is no different; in fact, perhaps it is even more important in this case to involve your child in the process. Allowing them to decide for themselves what they wish to bring along, making sure they have their own space when you arrive at your new residence, and letting them help in decorating the new place are all great ways to bring your child into the experience and provide a secure environment emotionally. It is possible that your child will not be keen about making new friends right away. Allow your child to get accustomed to the environment and all of these things should fall into place on their own.

Make it fun!
If you are able to do any research on fun things to do in your new locale before you arrive there, it will go a long way towards helping your family to adjust in the new environment. Having fun builds good memories, and good memories make a person feel comfortable in their surroundings. So, once you get to your new home and get settled, go off and do something fun! This will involve everyone as well as taking their minds off the newness of the location. It shows your children this can be a fun experience and that the new place you have settled in has as much to offer as their previous home.

Don’t be late
If you are going to be sending your child to a daycare provider while you are at work, get there early for the first few days and spend time with your children to ease the transition. Children feel more secure when they know nothing bad will happen to them, and a little extra loving care from you can go a long way at this time.

Taking your children’s feelings and concerns into account when traveling will teach your children many worthwhile life lessons. They will learn how to rely on themselves and their own strength of character, how to walk with confidence into unknown situations, and how to quickly adjust their traits and habits to fit new cultures and new people.

Most children believe they will die if they have to move away from everything they know. Those children never learn to be resilient and self-confident, but your children will learn these wonderful traits and will thank you someday for helping them to develop the character that will serve them so well in adulthood.
